Hancock Shaker Village
What many consider the birthplace of modernist design, the Shaker sect from the 18th to the 20th century changed the way that people thought of architecture, interiors, and objects. Although the Shaker community has been all but eliminated due to a belief in chastity and dwindling converts, the influence on they had on design cannot be oversold. A focus on finding aesthetic beauty in function drives much of Shaker design. This is shown in everything from their minimal furniture design, to their various architectural inventions, to their simple-yet-beautiful way of living.
